SFX INTRO.   A LARGE DOUBLE SOUNDPROOFED STEEL DOOR IS

UNLOCKED AND THE DOOR OPENS.AFTER A SLIGHT DELAY, WE HEAR IT CLANG SHUT.

 

MUSIC INTRO. (JAZZ TRIO - BILL EVANS)

 

OPENING SCENE. A private railway carriage at the end of a soviet train on its way from Moscow to Berlin. 1965. In the carriage are a man and a woman, both ARE

soviets.They have an obvious rapport and know each other very well.

SHE - (ILSA) lATE 30’S, SILKY RUSSIAN VOICE with a VARIED CHANGEABLE ACCENT, AS IF SHE’S TRYING TO FIND THE RIGHT ONE.

HE - (SERGEY) MID TWENTIES, STRONG RUSSIAN ACCENT, IN THE CLIPPED BORED STYLE OF A CIVIL SERVANT.

 

Sfx. (Steam whistle in the distance and the sound of train interior, wheels running over tracks.)

 

SERGEY: Let me bring you up to date Comrade Ilsa.

 

ILSA: While we're on Soviet Soil Tovaraisch Bezrokov, use all 3 of my Soviet names. Birth name and family names remember? Yekaterina Josifina Alexeyev, or when I decide I want to get to know you better, just Yekaterina Josifina. It makes me feel more………

 

(SHE PAUSES.)

 

SERGEY: Soviet?

 

ILSA: I don’t need to feel more or less Soviet,comrade. We are all Soviet. We are the Soviet Union all of us, or have you forgotten that, along with all the other important customs of our country your generation seem to ignore.

 

SERGEY: Birth names!! You told me you were born on the street and both your father and your mother were the KGB. Or did you make that story up too?

 

ILSA : Three names or Tovaraisch Alexeyev. I’ll answer

to both, the choice is yours.

 

SERGEY:It’s good to have a choice these days.

 

ILSA:Your sense of humour will get you into trouble Tovairaisch. Be sure you know when and where to use it. Haven’t I always told you that?

 

SERGEY: Yes you have, Yekaterina Josifina.We’re not on Soviet Soil anymore Comrade. We left Moscow hours ago, and we’ve just crossed the border or hadn’t you noticed. Now you listen or we’ll be in Berlin, and you’ll be on your own.

 

ILSA: I’m seldom on my own, but I’m listening.

 

SERGEY: Herman Klein.
